Poetry

This is a poem I had to write for the final for my Oral Interpretation Class. The topic was "Oral Interpretation Is..." but I didn't title it.

It’s not the words that are said
But the way they are presented.
The volume, inflection,
Speed, connection.
What makes the great speakers so amazing?
Why, they’re ability to string or sing
The words that are as crisp as a bell, ringing.
The way they speak, so smooth and classy,
Makes the big project seem much less sassy.
And that daunting final so long and drawn out,
Is really just a string of events, so thoroughly mapped out.
It’s all in the voice, the magical device
Like making a bet, or throwing the dice
What will come?
Words? Advice? Or entertainment for some?
No one can know until that awaited moment
When the speaker stands up and clears his voice with a grunt
And the words start flowing
And the enchanted audience starts glowing
With enjoyment, enthusiasm, anticipation calmed down.
Until he ends, the crowd feels as he feels, every smile, every frown
And when at last, his show comes to an end,
The crowd cheers at their brave friend
Who’s shown them all how

To get up there and show off until the final bow.

Disrespect a little?

Ya know, I try my best to be genuinely nice to everyone, even people I don't know, but I just don't get it how someone can completely forget everything you've done for them. I understand when people grow apart and sometimes you have to remove yourself from a situation/person because it's unhealthy and maybe even dangerous, but after they've done nothing but been there for you...? Why is it so hard to people to show some respect to others. Like, I get if you're having a bad day or something, but when you've been through so much with a person and they just turn around and completely forget about you, that makes absolutely no sense.

Maybe this is why I have literally 3 friends and one of them is my mother. Three people I genuinely trust in the world and can go to when I'm in need. That seems a little absurd since I feel like whenever anyone needs something or someone to vent to I'm there for them. I always try my hardest to be a kind and forgiving person who will be a shoulder to cry on and a hand to hold you on your way back up. Do I deserve this kind of treatment in response? I must, right? Why else would I have no friends and be so damn depressed all the time. I guess my purpose in life is just to let other people use me until I've been all used up and there's nothing left to get. Thanks guys, thanks a bunch.

Holy Toledoes!!! [Video]

This was intense, like you have no idea.

Check In

Hey guys,
here's my quick little blog to kill more time... I'm doing some serious procrastination from my studies. Does anyone else find themselves doing that? All I really want to do is go to bed but I know I have a test to study for and some assignments due tomorrow but all I've been able to do is goof off online. Literally, this is horrible; I watched a movie, went on Facebook, read an interesting article about flirting, went on YouTube. I think I have a serious problem.

Ok, since I've now wasted approximately three hours of potential study/sleep time, I really am going to study now.... Argh.

Also,  a huge shout out to any veterans who so bravely and valiantly fought for this country. I have an immense amount of respect for you. God bless you and your families.

Books in General

So I don't know about anyone else, but I genuinely hate reading nonfiction books. Don't get me wrong, I can get sucked in to almost anything of pretty much any topic, but it's so much harder when what I'm reading is nonfiction. I enjoy stories and mysteries that are real or based on true stories, but something like textbooks... ugh. I'm in a class called Just War Tradition which studies, you guessed it, the just war tradition through the years. It started out really interesting, how the ancient Greeks viewed war and its justness and blah blah blah. The only problem with the class is the textbook. It's so much more boring than other textbooks, even of the most mundane topics like Introduction to Public Speaking. It's essentially a compilation of primary texts of historic authors with little introductory blurps from the authors. IT'S SO BORING.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't contain myself anymore, hence this rant. I'll be done for now. Look for a video on my YouTube channel which of course I will post here and on my tumblr... Something's stirring! :)

Homecoming Take 2

This past Saturday was Winona State University's Homecoming and boy was it a good one. The day started out rather early since I took my friend back to her apartment at about 7:30 so she could get ready for cheerleading. By 8:30 am her neighbor's music was already pounding and you could tell the party had begun. We headed to the annual parade that goes down Huff Street and shows off all of the cool things going on at WSU. My personal favorite part was the fact that a guy with an adorable dog stood behind us so we got to play with him a little bit but I think the guys enjoyed the Hip Hop team as they did the wobble in skimpy leggings.... No surprise there. After only a few shenanigans and some great pictures we headed to McD's, the ultimate place to eat when hungover (not for me sillies, the others were hungover, I was just hungry).

When we finally got back to the apartment the parties and pre-gaming were in full swing. There was a case of beer on the counter that I'm pretty sure didn't even last 2 hours before it was gone. We hurried over to the football field an hour early and ended up getting center field, front row spots and cheered our hearts out! We cheered on Lindzey as she cheered with the cheerleaders and screamed and screamed at those football players. Unfortunately, it started raining at halftime so after watching the cheerleader/dance team performance, we were outta there. Little did we know that we would get back to a shock.

It turns out that the deck on Lindzey's neighboring apartment collapsed just before the game began. These were the same people that started drinking at 8:30 in the morning. Apparently there was about 8 people on the actual deck and like 3 to each step going down. Eight people were admitted to the hospital and it even got on the news all the way in Rochester. Basically, it was a HUGE deal. That didn't stop the party tho, the people directly below and around them continued into the wee hours of the night.

It was a blast to watch all the crazy drinking games and drunks stumble around. It's crazy to think the party in Lindzey's apartment lasted until at least 3 am after an entire day of drinking. I'm proud of those I partied with.

Here's to hoping not too many people got minors and no one was hurt. I hope everyone had a kick ass homecoming! Needless to say, I'll definitely come back to visit during homecoming next year!

Good stuff to know!

I found this today whilst browsing the internet during class and thought more should enjoy the pleasure of reading it. It's a rather good article. CHECK IT OUT! I'll post more of my own stuff later, but right now cookie dough and a movie are calling my name. Thanks!

Homecoming

Today is my high school's Homecoming. To be more precise, my senior year Homecoming. The only thing different about mine compared to all the people in my class is that I go to school 200 miles away and have since junior year. I'm still a student at my high school, I just don't take any classes there.

You know, as much as I hated high school, I still miss the festivities of Homecoming week. The dress-up days, the excuse to be totally silly and get away with it. Even voting for the king and queen.

Last year I went back and went to the game, played with the pep band, and even went to the dance. This year, I'm going back of course, but only to see Erik since he's going back this weekend, too.

It's crazy how people change. Their priorities change. In high school, I was extremely worried about fitting in and getting good grades, being cool and enjoying "the best years of my life." Now, I still worry about my grades, but I do things that I want to do because I want to do them. I've stopped caring what other people think of me and the need to fit in. That's the glory in going to school and getting away from that damn small town. I got away from the cliques, the judging, and the hell that high school was and is for so many people.

I'm truly glad that I left Hutchinson at 16 to do bigger and better things in my life. I only hope that the people trapped there are able to break the mindset and see the world differently someday.

Sunday Is a Cursed Day

Welp, it's Sunday. Gotta love Sundays, right? The end of the weekend fun, the day to do homework and catch up on all of the things you're not going to have time to do during the week. Sundays are much much worse the day after a wedding.

Yesterday, my cousin got married and while I was the Designated Driver, I can't imagine how some people's mornings went. Weddings in my family, like in so many others, are strictly an excuse to get drunk, like most other family gatherings. There were a few people who couldn't form coherent sentences but other than that it was just a really good time. It was great to see the bonding of two people who really love each other....

Alright, no more sappiness, time for laundry and perhaps cleaning my car. Homework can wait.

Toodles!

Study Break

Welp, I was studying for a test I have tomorrow but the subject just got so dull so here I am. Really I might as well blog tho, since it's been such a long time since I have. Not that it matters if I update the interwebs with my wanderings but I'll scrawl them out just for shits and giggles.

I recently read a book called Asylum. It was, as you could guess, about an old mental institution. This building had been shut down many years ago and was bought by a local college. The college was holding a summer program for high school students and their dorms were to be in this building. There happens to be an old wing that is sectioned off and supposedly locked until one boy goes wandering. He convinces his two good friends to come with him and then weird things start happening. He receives mysterious letters in an old loopy handwriting and experiences lapses in memory. Suddenly a boy is found dead and upon further investigation of the old wing, the main character realizes he has the same name as an old, tyrant of a warden. It spirals and gets very crazy. You will never know what to expect in this creepy, scandalous book. Very suspenseful and exciting.

I picked that book up when I was visiting my boyfriend in Fargo, ND over labor day. Nothing less than a six hour drive from where I live. It was long and boring but getting to see him was amazing. It was a very nice three day weekend even though it went from scorching heat to bitter coldness in a matter of days. Now I miss him like crazy. Actually, just last week, I was having a movie night and I watched the movie Dear John since I'd read the book like a year ago. Well, I ended up bawling my eyes out... Needless to say, I've steered clear of sappy love stories since then.

What else is new? Nothing very exciting. I'm afraid all I ever do is work, study, and sleep. Though not as much of any of those things as I would like. In fact, I skipped out of one of my classes early just so I could take a nap before work so I could make it through the night. Now I'm trying my hardest to keep my eyes open while I study for my stupid advertising test tomorrow.... I should probably get back to that. It's just so hard to stop talking when I get started.... I know I ramble, but why not? It's not like anyone reads this stuff anyways.

Wish me luck!

Stress

It's day two of classes and I'm already stressing out.

I had my first day back at work tonight and all was fine. The employees still respect me far more than I was ever respected back home and I can have intelligent conversations with the people around me.

Classes have been going fine, except for the fact my schedule just changed yet again and I now have to go back to the bookstore and change my load of books. Yippee. The only good thing about that is that my books are free. Yay PSEO.

My Great Aunt is not doing so well and quite a lot of my extended family has come to Winona to surround her with love and prayers. The only problem with that is that they're all coming to the house I'm staying in and are slightly less than quiet. Hopefully I'll get some amount of sleep tonight.

I miss Erik like crazy and have already planned to come up and see him. I got my shifts covered at work and still feel guilty about it beings it was my first week back.

So why am I stressing out, you ask? I wish I knew. Maybe it's the fact that things are changing and haven't gotten into a rhythm yet. Maybe it's my totally new environment. Maybe I'm just going insane. Anything is possible. Part of me just feels like I really am going crazy. I have no reason to feel this way and realistically, no reason to entrust you, my readers, with this information; assuming anyone does actually read my randomness....

Sigh...

Welcome to day one of eating lunch alone in the cafeteria. This was my life every day last year and while I got plenty of reading done, it wasn't particularly enjoyable. That's one good thing about living off campus this year. It's not blatantly obvious that I'm extremely introverted and socially awkward because people eat alone at their houses all the time. The trouble with that is it's not very convenient to run home all the time to kill some time.

I guess I'll just embrace my awkward independence and go with it. After all, it's only the second day of classes.

One last thing: jalapeño ketchup is AMAZING.

Ta ta for now.

Day One

Here we go. Sitting in my first class waiting for the prof to arrive and the torture to begin. And of course, the first class of the semester is Oral Interpretation. I still don't even know what to expect. Hopefully all goes well enough.

On the bright side, on the bike ride up to campus today, my poptart got warmed up and is now slightly gooey and delicious on the inside. Yummm!

Learning

Welp, classes start tomorrow so naturally, I have nothing ready. It's just about 11 pm and I'm still looking over and changing my schedule. This shit is stressful!

As of right now I'm taking kinda stupid classes. I only got into a couple that I wanted and some of them I'm only taking  because I need them to graduate and fulfill goals. The only bright side to that is that my classes don't start until 11 am at the earliest. Whew sleeping in!

Here's my current schedule... bound to change in the next day or so...
Monday: Oral Interpretaion, Human Biology, and Introduction to Art
Tuesday: Just War Tradition and Classical Mythology
Wednesday: Oral Interpretation, Contemporary Activites: Nia-muscular, Human Bio, and Intro to Art
Thursday: Just War Tradition and Classical Mythology
Friday: Oral Interpretation and Human Bio

It totals 16 credits, which for me really isn't very many but maybe that's not such a bad thing since I also am going to at least try to work. Needless to say, it should be an interesting semester.

Plus, to top everything off, my boyfriend just moved about 7 hours away from me. I know he's going to a great school that has a great program for what he's going into but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck.

Alright, now that I've dwelled on all of the negative things about to happen to me, maybe I should put my time to good use and get some crap ready for classes and then maybe get some sleep... I wish.

Nighty Night all!

Books, Books, Books... My Life

In my mini bio thingy, I wrote I would blog about the books I was reading at the time and well since I've been super bad at blogging consistently, I'll just tell you about the books I have read thus far this summer.

Untouchable: A young child who is bullied and a widower who works in an overnight cleaning business. He cleans up after someone dies and becomes so disconnected from the world that he started to believe the lie he told himself about how his wife died. The boy becomes attached to a house that recently had a fire and ends up spending most of the time he has while his dad is at work there instead of sleeping. Throughout reading, you start to feel so sorry for what this little family had to go through until the resolution at the end which I refuse to give away.

Edith: Not my best pick but I read it through anyways since it was only about 80 pages long. It was basically about this woman who normally has major issues with men because she's very tom-boyish and slightly BA. Her guy friend of forever sets her up and she falls head over heels in love with him. The end. Yeah... Argh

Jailbird: As lame as the title sounds, the book is actually very good. It's about an escaped convict who falls in love with a small-town lawyer. Scandalous, right? Anyways, she was wrongly convicted and only guilty of being raped and self defense. She ends up on the run to save her life and the life of the daughter she had to give up in prison who was raised by her brother. It's rather suspenseful and definitely a must read.

Fifty Shades of Grey: Yes, I read it. I had to just because of all of the hype surrounding it. The story line was amazing in all honesty and I devoured the book. It was, however, a sex novel and that part was... interesting to say the least. The worse part was that I was reading while visiting my dad and grandparents and my grandma really wanted to read it after me.... Yeah, that was awkward. I managed to finish it just as we were dropping them off at the airport so I didn't have to have a discussion with her about it but it was still weird. I haven't read the rest of the series and probably won't because the ending pissed me off but all in all it was a good book.

Rescuing Hope: The book is about human trafficking and is based on a compilation of true stories that girls go through every day. It's based in Atlanta, GA, and the main character is a fourteen year old who is lured into this horrible life. At first she doesn't even realize what she's gotten into but before you know it, she is nowhere near herself. She gets a new name, new hair, new makeup, and a new attitude just to make it through each day. An organization to stop human trafficking was holding an event in a park not far away from where Hope was staying and by some miracle, she found herself there and was suddenly made aware that she had lost herself. Definitely a must read but it's very hard because it's so realistic. My dad couldn't get through it, especially since he has a teenage daughter.

Fun Facts!

So all summer I've been working my butt off basically. To elaborate, I lifeguard at the local pool, teach swimming lessons, and work at Godfather's pizza. Essentially this means I have absolutely no social life and since my boyfriend works Monday through Thursday from 2 pm till 12:30 am I never get to see him either. It's definitely been interesting but I'm making the best of it and get to laugh at all the things I hear around the pools.

Yesterday, I was deck guarding for a preschool class. I was watching my friend teach these 3-5 year olds how to swim and a couple of them just would not listen. It's completely understandable for 4 year old boys not to listen but we try anyways. As Kim was working with one of the girls in the glass I hear the mom of one of the non-listening boys talking. "Trayton, if you don't listen, we're not going to the library."

I'm sorry, what? That's incredible! Going to the library means I have to focus and get stuff done and I avoid that place like the plague sometimes. I wish going to the library was a privilege or a reward.

I just thought that was cool enough to share with the interwebs. I certainly hope my kids are like that.

Quick Overview

So since I went to Italy and Greece roughly two months ago, I should probably finish blogging about it. I've seen so many things since then that I've wanted to blog about but haven't been able to because I swore I would finish these blogs before I went on to other things.

Here are all of the places we visited:
-Mycenae
-Pompeii
-Epidaurus
-The Acropolis

We also experienced an authentic Greek Evening at a Greek restaurant, went on a ten hour ferry ride on which I got very seasick, spent a sunset on the Aegean Sea, spent all my money shopping in a suburb of Athens, lost my ATM card in Italy, and shopped on a pedestrianized street.

The trip was amazing and coming back to the real world was way harder than I ever thought imaginable. The weather was amazing the whole time we were there with not a cloud in the sky. Driving through the countryside was gorgeous even though we saw things that weren't so different from what we see every day.

Needless to say, I definitely plan to go again and spend far more time experiencing all the culture I can. I highly recommend going if you can.

Arrival!

After a lengthy 8 hour flight including some food, movies, and a tiny amount of sleep, we finally landed in Rome, Italy. We disembark into what seems like a very clean and efficient airport. When we head down to customs and baggage claim, however, we are greeted by a very different scene. There are people everywhere and the smell is horrid. We were included in part of that smell after not changing clothes or showering in about two days, but it was still rough. There was also absolutely no organization in the lines. When we finally reached the gate to get into the country, the man who checked my passport hardly even looked at me. He was much too concerned with the text he was typing. The baggage claim area was equally as smelly and unorganized, if not worse. We fought our way to our carousel and then attempted to form a pile of our 22 bags.

Once all of our bags had been retrieved, we tried to head to the exit to find our tour guide. After about half an hour, we headed out to our bus and were soon on our way into downtown Rome. Since our flight out of Philadelphia was four hours late, we had missed the tour of Vatican City, but we were still hoping to see the Colosseum. Our chaperones told us we would get to see it, but probably not get inside since the rest of the group we were hooking up with were already halfway through their tour. Very much to our surprise, the bus parked and we made our way on foot into the Colosseum. We went on a mostly self-guided tour through most of the Colosseum until we found the group we were staying with over the rest of the trip. For the next 15 minutes, a tour guide lead us through the remainder of the Colosseum and onto more ruins in downtown Rome.

We headed a couple of blocks away and got to see where Roma was founded and started; the hill where Romulus and Remus were left as small boys, the building where the Vestile Virgins stayed, an ancient theatre, the tomb where the ashes of Caesar were spread and where people bring flowers still to this day. It was beyond cool to see all of this historical architecture and life but after two nights of only a few hours of sleep and no food for 10+ hours, we were completely exhausted and it was very obvious that our crew were losing interest fast. After what seemed like years, our monotonous tour guide said goodbye and we were on our way to dinner at last.

We made the short walk to our bus, past a newly married couple taking pictures and headed to a little pizza place for supper. We had a choice of ham or margarita (cheese) pizza and were served an entire pizza to each person. It was beyond delicious. Never have I ever experienced such good pizza and working at a pizza place after eating that delicacy has been so hard. Every time I go for a piece I secretly hope for the same scrumptiousness but it never comes. For dessert we had a type of gelatin with chocolate on top called panna cotta. Needless to say, I ate my fill and was completely rejuvenated and ready for our night walking tour.

We met our tour guide right outside the restaurant and headed to an area that had once been a racetrack. It was an oblong area with shops and businesses all around the edges and a beautiful fountain in the middle. In our 15 minute stay in the area, we met a couple human statues who moved if you gave them money. I through in a euro and he had me come up on his box with LJ. He wrapped his arms around me, gave LJ his fake gun to shoot at his head and kissed me on the cheek. I have officially been kissed by an Italian guy! It's kind of a big deal! That became my motto throughout the whole trip as our fortune seemed to have changed.

Next stop on our tour was the Pantheon. Since it was after 8 pm, we didn't get to go inside but even getting to see this monument was amazing. The sheer size blew me away and I think I took about 10 pictures of just the door because it was so massive.

Our last stop was the Trevi Fountain. It's legend that if you throw coins into the fountain, you are destined to return to Roma again, so of course we all took our turns throwing some change into the fountain. The correct form is to hold your coins in the right hand and throw them over left shoulder behind your back. We got there at sunset so the fountain was basically just beautiful. We also got to try authentic Italian gelato while we were there. I got coffee and chocolate in one dish and it was heavenly. I think I died a little right there at the first bite.

On the way back to the bus, we walked past the Spanish steps and snapped a few pictures there. Our tour guide left us and we boarded our bus to make the half hour trek to the hotel.

The Waiting

As we made our way to the airport, there was a very uncertain mood in the atmosphere. Even though we knew we would be going somewhere, we didn't know where that would be. For all we knew, we could be heading to book a flight back to Minneapolis. Still trying our hardest to hope for the best, our group took over a small section of seats in the waiting area in front of the ticket kiosks as two of our chaperones fought to get us tickets to Rome.

The uncertainty only rose as the hours drew on and our plans kept changing so often that slowly, we started to drift off in naps and wander in our restlessness. At some point we even made a Harlem Shake video just as an attempt to brighten the overall mood.

Then, a miracle dawned and we had 17 of our necessary 22 seats booked out to Rome that very evening. We were elated, except for those five people that were put on standby. It was completely random  who was chosen, but it was still so hard to see four students and a teacher potentially be left behind.

We made our way to the gate, this time walking leisurely as opposed to our previous run though the Philadelphia airport and began the seemingly short wait before boarding scheduled within the next hour. As we waited, one by one, the five people on standby slowly were given boarding passes. Before we knew it, we all had tickets leaving for Rome in less than an hour. Or so we thought.

Due to mechanical issues, our plane was being worked on. It was supposed to be finished prior to us even reaching the gate, but it was running a little late. That was all fine and dandy, we were just happy to be getting to Rome, even if it was a little later than expected. The anticipated hour delay turned into two and then three and then four and we still weren't on our plane. The mood had plummeted once more as people running on minimal sleep began to get cranky.

They ended up getting a different plane for us to take and we finally got to board!! The only problem with that was the fact that we were four hours late and now leaving at 10:45 pm made us have to wait in line in order to get on the runway. We were number 22 in line.

After all the waiting, however, we were happily on our plane and heading to Rome for the trip of a lifetime! Our spirits were far above the heavens!

Dirty Philly

Seemings as we weren't going to be able to get to Italy until Monday, the next flight with 22 available seats, we tried to find somewhere to sleep for the night, which is nearly impossible at 1 in the morning. And to top it all off, the US Open was going on that very weekend so there were no rooms available practically anywhere it Philadelphia. By some miracle, we found a hotel in New Jersey that would take us so we all hopped in taxis for the twenty minute drive. All was fine and dandy, or so it seemed, until the chaperone in my taxi got a text from one of the students saying they got in an accident. As much as we were hoping this was a joke, it was far from. One of the taxis without a chaperone had been hit by another car in an intersection. One girl hit her head rather hard on the divider between the front and back seats, and another one cut her chin.

Once all of the chaperoned vehicles found out that there had been an accident, one was sent to help and make sure everyone was ok. With the cops and the taxi driver going at it, the four girls and teacher sat awkwardly, waiting to find out what to do. The cop was willing to take them to the emergency room, but after a fiasco with the driver, sped off without a word. The girls had no choice but to get back into the cab to get to the emergency room. When they arrived after what seemed like an eternity, they were struck by the sheer condition of the Philadelphia ER. There were homeless people apparently trying to take up a new home and beyond disgusting bathrooms with feces on the toilet seat. Needless to say, they were dying to get out of there. After waiting three hours for some glue for the cut chin, the exhausted group made their way to the hotel in yet another taxi.

With less than three hours of sleep, we make our way to the airport once again, but this time in completely safe vans instead of taxis. The only problem is that we don't have any tickets and really don't know if we will be heading back home today or hopefully to Rome.

And the Adventure Begins..

The morning of Thursday, June 13th arrived and our whole group was beyond giddy. We had a flight at 1:45 that afternoon to go to Philadelphia to catch our connecting flight to Rome, Italy. Exciting right? We arrived at the airport at 10:00 am just to ensure we had enough time, got through security without a hitch and before you know it, we're at the gate. Only to find out our flight is delayed about four or five hours due to extreme wind on the east coast. Knowing that our flight out of Philadelphia is early enough that we won't make it if our flight from Minneapolis is that late, our chaperones tried their very hardest to bump our flight up. We did it and ended up only being an hour and a half late.

We were on the plane and our spirits were back up. The only thing stopping us was the lengthy run through the Philadelphia airport we knew was ahead of us. As soon as we landed, we were the first ones off the plane and we began sprinting from gate B2 all the way to A23, which is not as close as we were hoping. After practically a two mile sprint, we see get A23 and realize there is no plane. Our flight had left ten minutes early and we were only 5 minutes late. That flight was missing over 60 people, which included 22 of us. Basically, our hope was non-existant.

Two of our chaperones then sat in line to and at the courtesy desk counter for the next four hours. The result: nada. We were stranded in Philadelphia. Super.

Long Time No Blog

So hi. It's been awhile since I've talked to you guys. My bad, my life suddenly decided to get really busy so I've basically been working and sleeping. Anyways, since I just enjoyed a lovely nap in the sun and I'm tan to a crisp and my amazing boyfriend is making my friend and I french toast, it seems like the perfect time to tell you all about my adventures across the world.

Just as a warning, the next sequence of blogs is going to be completely about my trip to Italy and Greece. The reason I'm breaking them apart into numerous blogs is because there's just too much to say and the post would be extremely long. Plus it doesn't seem like you're reading as much if it's broken into sections.

So here we go!

Milestones

Milestones are a big part of every person's life. Well obviously, right, that's why they're called milestones. But they vary in importance to each person. Some may think a birthday is no big deal while others think it's beyond the best day of the year. The same goes for every other big thing that happens in a person's life. Graduation. College. First Significant Other. Marriage. Elopement. Engagement. First Public Speech. First Real Job. First Best Friend Forever. First Born. First Sibling. All of these things count as milestones, among countless others. But why am I writing about milestones? We all know what they are and most people don't care about other people's milestones. Regardless of that, however, I have decided to document the milestone in my life today.

Today is my one year anniversary with my amazing boyfriend. And by the way, this is your warning that the ooey gooey mushy lovey dovey stuff is about to begin.

We started out as those awkward kids who have friends and get along but never really speak about feelings. We hung out more and more as the school year last year progressed and low and behold developed feelings for each other. After quite the cruel 11:11 wish, he finally figured out that I liked him and even if he couldn't believe it, he actually asked me out. Whew! It's a miracle!

After that, the rest is history. I can trust him more than family and know that he will never hurt me. He knows me better than I know myself I think. He knows exactly how to brighten my moods and make me giggle. He creates a safe place and will forever be my "Face to Call Home." I don't know what I would do without him and it's just crazy to think a year has gone by. It seems like just yesterday we were sitting by the sanctuary chasing ducks and awkwardly tweeting.

He's my best friend, my love, and I can't imagine my life without him. Thanks for a wonderful year, and here's to many more to come. I love you sweetheart.

Restlessness

Just as a warning, this is a rant, and a rather pointless one at that.

It's currently 5:30 am and my alarm is not set to go off until 7:30. But instead of enjoying a wonderful slumber like I should be doing, I'm blogging. For some strange reason, I haven't been able to get more than 2 1/2 hours of sleep. It's rather annoying, but seeings as the birds are starting to chirp and the sun is beginning to rise, I don't think I'll have any better luck in the next short while.

I have no reason for not being able to sleep. I'm not even stressed out right now. I'm rather flustered by my lack of snoozing, especially since I even tried all my tricks. I listened to some soft classical music, went to the bathroom, changed shirts, used different amounts of blankets and still nothing!

Oh well I guess, maybe this is a sign that I should just read or eat or exercise something. I really don't know anymore.

I sincerely hope you (whoever you may be) do not have this problem ever and are enjoying your beauty rest right at this very moment.

Bad Hair Days

Have  you ever died your hair? Ever gotten a haircut?

If your like almost every other human being out there, you've most likely done at least one of those things.

Now, have you ever had something go mysteriously wrong while having either of those things done and had to live with the consequences?

I have had the wonderful misfortune of having both of those things happen at the same time. I completely brought this on myself, and quite honestly it makes me giggle, but it still kinda sucks.

This is how it all began...

I've been dying my hair for about 4 years and I never do it at regular intervals so it usually ends up some pretty random colors. Also, I'm kinda cheap so I buy the box dye instead of spending about ten times more to go get my hair done professionally. I'm the same way with hair cuts. My hair is generally pretty simple so Cost Cutters usually can do the trick. Unless I'm doing something outrageous and fancy with my hair, I keep it pretty cheap.

At school, this was fine because there was this great lady at a nearby Cost Cutters that did an awesome job and really knew her stuff. At home, there's approximately zero inexpensive, decent hair salons. In the past I've gone to Great Clips but I just couldn't bring myself to go there again. Instead, what I chose to do was get my hair cut while I was in Atlanta. There's a lot more variety of what I could find so I thought it would be a good idea but what I ended up with was very unexpected.

I ended up going to this little salon in Walmart (I know, that should be a sign within itself). I went ahead into the salon anyways and got serviced by a very stereotypically black woman. Before you get ahead of yourself, please believe me when I say I am not racist or prejudice, but I do find it mildly entertaining when I encounter someone who lives so gloriously up to the stereotype. She was very nice and seemed very knowledgeable so I thought, what the heck. She washed my hair and brought me over to the chair and we started chit chatting as she began to trim my hair. I had mentioned earlier that my layers needed to be touched up and she was happy to oblige. She insisted that she wasn't worried about how long it took but that she wanted me to be satisfied and she wanted a quality product. It sounded pretty good to me and when she was done, it honestly looked pretty good. Then again, my hair was wet and therefore pretty wavy and crazy how it likes to be. The next day, when I straightened my hair, I got to see just how unevenly it had been cut. The layers are rather sparatic and random and the right side is about a quarter inch longer than the left.

Realistically, my less than spectacular hair cut really isn't that big of a deal, and it was only like twenty bucks. There are ways to get around having uneven layers and interesting bangs, but when coloring it goes awry, we have bigger problems.

Since it's summer and my hair will fade in the sun anyways, I figured I would just try to dye my hair back to its natural color since my roots seriously needed some attention. Unfortunately, my hair never turns the color it's supposed to and for some strange reason, every time I dye my hair, red magically turns up and tints my whole head.

Now what I have is a strange haircut and a whole head of red/brown/caramel colored hair and I'm not going to do anything to change it. Yes, I may have a couple bad hair weeks, but it's hair. It grows and fades and changes every single day. I'm not worried about what it will look like and at least it will bring a smile to my face whenever I look in the mirror.

Smile on, hair enthusiasts! :D

The Unknown

You know the song "Whole Lotta Lovin'" by Led Zeppelin? Well I recently learned something about that song that may have cast a dark shadow over a song I previous really enjoyed.

My older brother used to have night terrors when he was just little and would point to things in his room that no one else could see. Everyone just assumed it was our deceased uncle visiting him, but wouldn't a loving uncle be sweet and gentle? It's certainly a more comforting thought to think a family member is visiting a child versus an unknown entity haunting a child.

Luckily, he grew out of it and as far as I know, he doesn't even remember it. Regardless, does it bother no one else that a child, safe in his crib, can awaken screaming in terror from something no one can see. There is no help that can be offered to a child going through something like this.

But what does all of this have to do with a song by Led Zeppelin? Well, my brother once commented on certain part of this song saying "It sounds like a nightmare, Dad." Now, the only thing I can imagine while listening to that song is my sweet brother, standing in his crib, crying and screaming frozen in terror. Part of me wishes whatever haunted him was my uncle, but I just don't know if that's the case, and if it's not, then I have no desire knowing what it was.

Perspective

It's such a powerful word with so many meanings.

I figured out what the point of that movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was. It explains how elderly people realize that there's more to life than what they've grown accustomed to. They gain a new perspective on things as they adjust to a culture so very different from the one they thought they knew.

Some grow with change, some become uptight and try their best to fight new things. Perspective can change you and help you to see the brighter side of things.

In our own ways, we all live in a bubble of what we supposedly know. Within this bubble, however, we are blindsided by the wonderful things we are surrounded by. Knowledge is power and with that knowledge of other places and how they do things, we can move forward in all things in life.

A little perspective goes a long way in any situation and it just so happens that it has helped with innovation and progress.

All that being said, having a little perspective just might help you get out of your next jam.

Happy sailings  optimists!

And the Adventure Begins...

Welp.. Here we are, my first blog.

I always dreamed of having a blog. Don't ask me why but it was just something I wanted to do. The only thing stopping me was the lack of anything exciting happening in my life. This summer seems like the perfect time to start. The usually very boring life of Sam Jones is about to get a lot more exciting! I will be traveling out of the country for the first time ever along with going to New Orleans. All of this is happening after my visit to see my Dad in Atlanta where I currently am.

Along with all of my travels this summer I will be working at my local pool as a lifeguard and at the local Godfather's. Pretty exciting stuff, I know.

I am currently watching a move called The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel... or at least I think that's what it's called. I'm not really sure, my step mom picked it out. It's good so far but rather strange and I'm not really sure of the plot. We'll see.

So, yeah. Sorry about to sparatic nature of this blog but that's kinda just how my mind works. It jumps around a lot and I just can't help it. Since my blogs will probably be just my thoughts they will definitely be spastic and completely unorganized.

I hope I haven't completely bored you to death or scared you away but there's more to come!
